Specialised Clinics

There are 3 specialised clinics at the WCRC

There are 3 specialised clinics at the WCRC, namely seating clinics, scoliosis clinics and hand clinics.

Hand Clinics


Purpose of these clinics:
  • Determining diagnoses and prognoses of clients with hand or elbow complications that affect his/her functional ability.
  • Candidates for possible surgical intervention are identified.
  • Need for and type of treatment required is discussed.
Target group:
Any client with hand or elbow complications that affect his/her functional ability.
Services are provided by an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, both from WCRC and the attending physician, Dr Solomons, hand surgeon at Groote Schuur- and Vincent Palotti Hospitals

Venue:
All clinics are held at OPD, WCRC.
Frequency: Once every 2 months

Scoliosis Clinic


Purpose of these clinics:
  • Diagnosis of spinal deformities, including X-ray studies.
  • Identifying clients for corrective surgery and other spinal surgical interventions.
  • Identifying clients for conservative management by means of bracing.
  • Referring clients who require special / corrective seating to the seating clinic.
  • Management strategies are implemented to prevent further development of new secondary complications.
Target group:
Any client with physical disabilities and spinal deviations / deformities.
Services are provided by two physiotherapists of the WCRC, one Orthotist from the Orthotic and Prosthetic Service and the attending physician, Dr Rob Dunn, Orthopaedic Surgeon from Groote Schuur Hospital and Head: Acute Spinal Cord Injury Unit, GSH.

Venue:
All clinics are held at OPD, WCRC.
Frequency: Once every 2 months

Seating Clinics


Purpose of these clinics:
  • Specialist referral centre for clients with special seating needs within the Western Cape.
  • Implement corrective seating to improve / prevent the development of secondary complications resulting from incorrect seating postures.
  • Follow-up service for high -risk clients who have been discharged from WCRC in-patient rehabilitation, to monitor high- risk areas to prevent secondary complications from developing.
  • Make alterations to seating systems as is required due to growth (children), progressive disorders or post corrective spinal-surgery.




  • Act as seating assessment service for the Road Accident Fund.
  • Assess previously discharged clients whose Road Accident Fund claims are settled for appropriate assistive devices (issued from private sector).
  • Act as a referral / consultancy source to advise / guide / train the referring therapists – as far as possible, referring therapists should accompany their clients to the clinic
  • Serves as training ground in wheelchair/ buggy seating for WCRC staff, as well as attending carers, referral staff and all PAWC seating training.
  • Identify clients who require other seating related interventions, e.g. scoliosis clinic, pressure sore management.
  • Platform where experts, suppliers and funders from the private sector meet, assess clients, discuss best practice with the aim to improve the quality of services and products provided to the client.
  • New mobility assistive devices are tested and developed and changes reflected and forwarded to National tender and the private sector.
  • Develop innovative ways to deal with clients with difficult seating needs using basic state tender devices.
  • Identify or coordinate educational needs in terms of seating depending on the nature of the referrals.
  • A secondary aim is to identify any medical problems, which are not managed and refer to appropriate sources.

Target group: Any client using a wheelchair / buggy with seating problems and/or secondary complications requiring corrective seating, prescription of appropriate devices and/or consultation.

Services are provided by physio-and occupational therapists of the WCRC, suppliers and tender contractors i.e. CE Mobility and Shonaquip.

Attending physician: OPD doctor on ad hoc basis
Frequency: On site clinics - Twice per month
Off site clinics: 5-6 x per month at schools, care centres, NGO’s and rural hospitals and clinics
